The Mind, Body, Spirit Connection

The Mind, Body, Spirit Connection

What is the mind-body-spirit connection?

Our philosophy is that the mind, the body, and the spirit are all connected to form our wellness. This means that our health and happiness are results of taking care of all three areas of the self. To be ‘healthy’, therefore, is to nurture all three aspects of our nature.

With this holistic approach to wellness, we can more deeply understand ourselves and our needs, especially while we adjust to the new challenges and opportunities of our Second Act.

Here are some examples of the mind-body-spirit connection at work:

  • Our eating habits often change when we are experiencing an overwhelming emotion: boredom, stress, sadness – this is a perfect example of how your mind affects your body.
  • Before learning to control emotions, a baby’s whole body moves in response to emotion: bright eyes, pure laughter, and clapping hands to express delight.
  • People who practice mindfulness feel good after they spend some time devoted to themselves. They feel focused and happy. That’s the mind and body, and maybe even your spirit, all working together.

The Science Behind the Mind-Body-Spirit Connection

The scientific and medical community have widely agreed that the body and the mind are intimately linked, even using the term ‘bodymind’ to speak of the connection as a single entity. Biologically, there is a connection between the body and the mind.

Specifically, the mind-body connection comes from the wisdom of a protein in our brains called neuropeptides. Considered to be the biology of emotions, these protein mediates what is happening in our mind and connects the sensation through our body. You might know them by names of serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin, and so on.

These proteins come into action based on how we react to occurrences in our daily lives. For instance, when you receive bad news, your mind will immediately ensure that your body is on the same page.

Taking a Holistic Approach

Based on the science, you can begin to take a more holistic approach in the way you take care of yourself and rewire your brain and your routines to be in control of your overall wellness.

Practices like yoga, meditation, mindfulness, and deep breathing can all help you regulate your bodymind response. Following healthy, natural diets that fit with your lifestyle will allow you to cultivate your body and gut health. Spending quality time with loved ones doing something you love can tend to your spirit.
